Gozo Village Holidays - Palazzino Cittadella
Palazzo Cittadella is an imposing and substantial townhouse situated amongst properties of similarly grand stature on the southern side of Victoria, Gozo’s capital. This excellent location permits less reliance on a car for transport as you are perfectly positioned to walk into town where all amenities, including several first class restaurants are found. It is also true to say that such a spacious property is somewhat rare to find amongst Gozo’s compact, intimate townscapes.
A handsome front door opens to reveal the largely open plan ground floor within which specific areas are clearly designated by distinctive stone archways, a feature so emblematic of Gozitan architecture. To the rear of the house, natural daylight light floods in through the three sets of double glass doors that lead onto the arched open terrace and private swimming pool just beyond.
A smart wrought iron banister chaperones the elegant stone staircase as it curves its way upwards. A generous landing area, three bedrooms and three bathrooms are found on the first floor with the second floor home to an enclosed summer room giving access onto a very large roof terrace. From this lofty vantage point there are magnificent views across the surrounding countryside of verdant terraced fields to the Mediterranean Sea sparkling in the near distance and, of course, up to the citadel that crowns the ridge overlooking Victoria.
Dominated by its eighteenth century cathedral, girdled by a network of atmospheric narrow streets housing interesting shops and irresistible restaurants, the citadel is effectively a vast open air museum: a magnificently preserved testament to island history that simply invites exploration.
About 1km from the house, central point of the capital itself is the Pjazza Indipendenza a fascinating microcosm of Gozitan life with its regular market, eclectic mix of local shops and varied selection of smart, atmospheric cafes, several of which have outdoor terraces. In one corner the Basilica of St George is often referred to as ‘the Golden Basilica’ due to a sumptuously ornate interior that makes it possibly the most indulgent (and beautiful) of Gozo’s baroque churches. As always, nothing is ever far away in Gozo so head to Xlendi Bay (4km) for a small beach and some excellent seafood restaurants.
