Annual General Meeting 2025

The Gozo Tourism Association held its 26th Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 27th February, 2025. This event was held at the Cesca Boutique Hotel in Xlendi Gozo. The Agenda of the Annual General meeting, included the reading of the last AGM minutes by GTA Secretary Mr. Mark Busuttil, and the financial report by the GTA Treasurer, Mr Konrad Scicluna.

In his opening message, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Dr. Ian Borg, noted the increases that Gozo is experiencing in tourist arrivals. Dr. Borg stated that the positive trajectory is the result of deliberate strategies, key collaborations and initiatives that have elevated Gozo’s profile. Minister Borg emphasized that tourism remains the corner stone of Gozo’s economy, therefore it is essential for all stakeholders to synergise efforts to sustain and improve Gozo’s touristic appeal. Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Borg thanked the outgoing GTA Council for their work, whilst he welcomed the new council and augured further productive collaboration.

In his address, the GTA Chairman Mr Paul Scicluna remarked that although during 2024 tourism in Gozo registered positive numbers, yet one cannot put aside certain issues that are of concern to the tourism sector on Gozo. The tourism sector on Gozo is concerned that Gozo’s distinct charm is being eroded by rapid development. While the sector welcomes improvements to the tourism product, unchecked development threatens the island’s unique appeal. Another problem being encountered by tourism operators is the increases in operating expenses, which if not tackled properly can reduce the competitive edge of the destination. Furthermore, Mr. Scicluna mentioned that while Gozo’s hospitality is rooted in its authentic, warm service, businesses are increasingly relying on employees from across Europe and beyond. GTA Chairman stressed the need to maintain the authenticity of the Gozitan touristic product, especially through a trained and skilled labour force.

The GTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joe Muscat then delivered an audio-visual presentation on the performance of the Association during 2024. He gave an overview of the Gozitan touristic performance during last year, as well as the work and initiatives undertaken by the Association during the course of the past year 2024.

In his address, the newly appointed Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority, Dr Charles Mangion, gave an insight on the results obtained during the past year, whilst highlighting the importance of the touristic diversity offered by Gozo. In this regard he mentioned the additional efforts being carried out by the Malta Tourism Authority to continue marketing Gozo with its particular tourism niches. The Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority Dr. Charles Mangion, whilst complimenting the GTA, emphasized the continuous collaboration and synergy between MTA and the GTA in promoting Gozo as a distinct destination.

The Annual General Meeting was also addressed by the Opposition Spokesperson Dr. Alex Borg, who whilst thanking GTA for its attainments, noted the increases in tourist arrivals to Gozo signifying the appeal of the Gozitan destination. Dr. Borg mentioned the need of a holistic approach for the renewal of the Gozo Channel Fleet as connectivity is the key element for the enhancement of the tourism sector. Whilst highlighting the sterling work being carried out by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Directorate for Tourism and Economic Development, Dr. Borg expressed his vision that tourism on Gozo needs to be sustained more with specific measures targeted towards the island’s tourism management and support for several niche markets.

The Annual General Meeting came to an end with the address of the Minister for Gozo Hon. Clint Camilleri, who highlighted the increases of tourist arrivals to Gozo during the past year. Minister Camilleri added that Government is committed to continue investing in the tourism industry, and that the positive results obtained in 2024 motivates the continuation of increased efforts in enhancing the improvements of the tourism product. The objective is to continue presenting Gozo as a distinct all-year round destination in order to preserve and augment a sustainable touristic product for the island.
