Comparative Gozo Tourism Survey between 2021 and 2022
During the month of January 2023, the Gozo Tourism Association conducted an online survey amongst its members focusing on the performance of the Gozitan tourism establishments during the year 2022, as well as the comparison with year 2021.
The encouraging response to this survey from Gozitan tourism operators covered a spread across the tourism sector on Gozo. The categories that filled in the survey were coming from the Accommodation sectors, Restaurants, Diving Centres, Tourist Attractions, Transport, Tour operators, DMCs, Travel Agencies, Real Estate and Tourism Consultancy firms.
The survey confirmed the positive effect on the business generated by the Gozitan tourism establishments during the January to December period, showing encouraging signs that 2022 was really and truly the recovery year. In fact, nearly 52% of the establishments reported more business on the previous year of 2021, with another 41% stated that their performance was equal to that of 2021, while 6.9 % reported less business than the year 2021. This improvement was corroborated further when 53% of respondents declared that the performance of their respective businesses from the foreing market during 2022 was better than that of 2021, with 40 % stating that the performance of their business was equal to that of 2021.
Furthermore 14.3% of the establishments reported more business from the domestic market on the previous year of 2021, with another 32 % stated that their performance was equal to that of 2021, while 53.5 % reported less business than the year 2021.
The majority of the tourism operators, or 71% stated that their revenue during the Feastive season of 2022 was equal to that of 2021, with 7% stating that this period was better than year 2021. Meanwhile 21 % reported less revenue during the feastive period on 2021 .
Tourism business were also asked about the business constraints and drawback in their respective operations over the past year 2022. The majority or 65% of respondents stated that these constraints remained unchanged, with 24% declaring that these were allieved and improved during 2022 when compared to 2021.
Finally, from this survey it transpired that 76% of respondents are employing foreign workers in their respective establishments with only 24% of the establishments reporting that they do not employ foreign workers.
